How do you make blown glass?

Comment on fait du verre soufflé ?
As a glass craftsman, we preferred here to present our own vision of glass blowing, an ancestral art that reinvents itself ad infinitum.
  1. The origins of blown glass

Blown glass is an artisanal technique that dates back to ancient times, where the Egyptians and Syrians were the first to master this technique more than 2000 years ago. Today, this technique is still used to create elegant and unique glass objects.

According to records, the Egyptians began to blow glass to create decorative and practical objects from 4000 BC. They used clay or metal canes to blow glass and give shape to objects.

Since then, blown glass has become a popular technique for creating elegant and unique glass objects.

  1. The manufacture of blown glass

The process of making blown glass begins with melting the glass in a high temperature furnace, usually around 1100°C. The glass is then removed using a blowing rod, which is the main tool used to blow air into the liquid glass to give it the desired shape. The glassblower must be skilled and quick to work the molten glass before it solidifies.

Watch the video of our workshop and our glass blower located in Bardo in Tunisia which explains the main steps in the manufacture of blown glass.

Blown glass offers great flexibility to artisans, as they can create a wide variety of shapes and sizes using different tools. For example, they may use molds to give glass a specific shape or use cutting and polishing tools to create intricate textures and patterns. Artisans can also add colors and patterns to glass using techniques such as casting, spinning, and plating.

Blown glass is used to create a wide variety of decorative objects, ranging from vases and goblets to chandeliers and sculptures. Blown glass objects can be found in a wide range of styles and colors to suit all tastes and decors. Modern artisans have continued to innovate using techniques such as glass and metal fusion to create even more unique pieces.

  1. Venetian craftsmen and Murano glass

The craftsmen of Venice are particularly known for their skill in blown glass. Their art dates back to the end of the 13th century, when the glassmakers of Venice were forced to move to the island of Murano to avoid the fires which easily spread through the city of Venice. Since then, Murano glass has become famous worldwide for its exceptional beauty and quality.
